Milestone Green flag For Shanklin Voluntary Youth And Community Centre

Shanklin Voluntary Youth and Community Centre is celebrating its continued success by receiving the prestigious Community Green Flag from the Keep Britain Tidy organisation, supported by the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government.

Now in its 25 year, the Green Flag is awarded to organisations that champion five principles:

  • To ensure that everybody has access to quality green and other open spaces, irrespective of where they live.
  • To ensure that these spaces are appropriately managed and meet the needs of the communities that they serve.
  • To establish standards of good management.
  • To promote and share good practice amongst the green space sector.
  • To recognise and reward the hard work of managers, staff and volunteers.

Shanklin VYCC, under the inspirational leadership of the late Bridget Biddlecombe, transformed derelict land around the centre, and helped established the Queen's Award Award for Volunteers, winning Shanklin Green Town Volunteers, as well as helping to maintain green space at the War Memorial, Community Library and Railway Station - in addition to regular litter picks in the town and on the beach.

Paul Biddlecombe, Chair of SVYCC and Bridget's husband, said:

“Bridget put so much into the centre and the community, and this award is a tribute to her commitment and dedication, along with the countless volunteers that make a difference to their community.”

Sue Godden, Shanklin Deputy Mayor, added:

“Bridget helped set up Green Town Volunteers and develop all of our projects, her boundless energy inspired all fortunate enough to know her.”

SVYCC is now in its 25th year, after re-opening in 1996, and a range of community activities during the week, and supports other youth groups, and community organisations, such as Shanklin Carnival and Green Town Volunteers.

Denyse Larner, from Shanklin Carnival, concluded:

“Volunteers across the Bay continue to make a real difference to the public realm, and residents and visitors benefit from the efforts of champions like Bridget - and this award is recognition of their continued contribution.”
