A medical emergency has prompted a multi-organisation rescue effort near to Northwood Park in Cowes this evening (Thursday).

The Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service has been tasked to provide aid to the Ambulance Service in what’s said to be a medical incident.

One appliance from Newport, another from Cowes, and the aerial ladder platform have been mobilised to the scene.

In the past few moments, the Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance has arrived on the scene, landing at Northwood Park, with specialist HEMS doctors walking to the scene.

A police cordon on Baring Road and Castle Hill is in place, with both roads partially closed.

UPDATED:

Crews are using the aerial ladder platform to extricate a casualty from the vicinity of the steps in Northwood Park.

Firefighters on the roof of the steps' facade are using what appears to be a sling system underneath the basket of the aerial appliance to support personnel in harnesses and conduct a rope rescue.

UPDATED - 23:46:

One casualty - a young male - has been extracted from a 20-foot deep void behind a wall by firefighters utilising rope rescue equipment and the aerial appliance.

The casualty's condition is not known at present.

Despite the attendance of the Air Ambulance and its specialist doctors, the casualty has been conveyed to St Mary's hospital via land ambulance.

Crews are beginning to stand down from the incident.
