Police helped paramedics bring a man into medical care, after what emergency services called a "mental health episode" in central Newport around 12.30pm today, Sunday 4 July.

Responders were observed at the scene on St. James Street soon after 12.30pm.

Officers said they had attended after reports of a "public order incident" in premises in the street, which they found on arrival was connected to the mental health of a man.

Soon after, a 43-year-old man was detained under Section 136 of the Mental Health Act.

The patient was then transferred into what police said was "appropriate care".

Inquiries by Isle of Wight Radio found that no injuries had been reported, and all businesses remained open as usual, after medical carers reached the man.
