Magenta Project To Work With Cowes Week To Promote Women In Sailing

Cowes Week organisers have announced they will team up with an initiative to promote women in sailing.

The world famous regatta — now approaching its 197th year — is joining forces with the Magenta Project, which aims to highlight the impact women have within the sport.

Speaking on behalf of Cowes Week Ltd, Regatta Director Laurence Mead said:

"We've watched The Magenta Project develop over the last couple of years and were inspired by the work they have done with other events and teams.

"Through our work with the Scaramouche Sailing Trust, we have seen increasing numbers of young women on the water and women already make up about 35% of the crew members during Cowes Week."

The Magenta Project will have a dedicated Hub for people to find out more about opportunities for women in sailing.

Women's Day will take place on Tuesday August 2, with a prize giving followed by a presentation and Q&A session with leading sailors from both Cowes Week and The Magenta Project.

Jonquil Hackenberg, Chair of The Magenta Project, added:

"We are very happy to be involved in the 2022 Cowes Week.

"Some incredible women have been part of this event, and we hope through this partnership we are able to encourage more to participate."
