Local Election: Meet The Greens Eyeing An Isle Of Wight Council Seat

The Isle of Wight Green Party has officially confirmed some of its candidates ahead of next year's local elections.

As Isle of Wight Radio previously reported, 30 wards are changing and one councillor is being lost as part of a shake-up of boundary arrangements in the run-up to May's battle for County Hall.

The Green Party says it has the "very best candidates ready to stand and fight for local residents".

Among the wards on the party's radar are: Osborne, Central Rural, Carisbrooke and Gunville, Chale, Niton and Shorwell and Freshwater North and Yarmouth.

The party's five chosen candidates for the target areas include:

Cameron Palin

The 18-year-old is standing in the newly-formed Osborne ward. If he were to win the seat, he would become one of the youngest councillors in the country, as Isle of Wight Radio previously revealed.

Cameron Palin said:

“It’s important people have the choice to vote for a local candidate who has their best interests at heart. I’ll stand up & fight for my community; like them I understand  the issues we face & we can make change together!”

The Osborne ward will replace the Whippingham and Osborne seat, which is currently held by Conservative councillor Stephen Hendry.

Island Labour and the Isle of Wight Liberal Democrats will put forward candidates, but names have yet to be revealed.

Claire Critchison

The South Wight resident will stand in the newly-renamed  Chale, Niton and Shorwell ward.

Council leader Councillor Dave Stewart is also expected to re stand, being the incumbent for the current Chale, Niton and Whitwell seat.

Claire Critchison said:

“As a 6th generation descendant of this ward I am passionate about the South Wight and I am ready to represent the residents.”

Daniel James

Already a Freshwater Parish councillor, Daniel James will fight for the Freshwater North and Yarmouth ward.

Mr James said:

“I'm standing to be your County Councillor because I believe you deserve a genuine choice. I pledge to represent your interests and to hold County Hall  to account."

Boundary adjustments have meant changes to the current Freshwater North ward - a seat which is currently held by Councillor George Cameron.

Julia Laursen

Julia will stand for the new Central Rural ward. The ward will now include Godshill.

She said:

“I’m standing because I believe I can represent our community needs whilst  working with other councillors in finding the best solutions for our Island.”

One of the main revisions is to divide the current Godshill and Wroxall ward, which is served by Cllr Rodney Downer

Joe Lever

Joe will stand for the renamed Carisbrooke and Gunville ward. The Carisbrooke seat is currently held by Cllr John Hobart.

“I believe so many Island communities are being overlooked and let down by the current administration. I want to offer residents of Carisbrooke and Gunville  a compassionate and competent alternative.”

The Isle of Wight Green Party says it has many more candidates in place and these are just their top targets who will be fighting to get into county hall in May 2021.
