Lengthy Delays Expected As Work Starts On Main Cowes To Newport Road

Lengthy delays are expected on the main Newport to Cowes road tomorrow (Tuesday), as major bus stop improvement works start.

The Isle of Wight Council has commissioned upgrades to bus stops on Cowes Road, near Horsebridge Hill.

The work, part of the Isle of Wight Council's £150,000 bus stop improvement programme, which aims to improve the safety and accessibility of bus stops.

Focus is on stops on the north and south-bound side of the carriageway, close to the County Showground and military history museum.

During the work, temporary two-way traffic lights will be in operation to make sure the upgrades can be carried out safely. The lights will be manually controlled during busy periods to help minimise any disruption.

Councillor Phil Jordan, Cabinet member for infrastructure, said:

"Thanks to these works, the bus stops will become fully accessible and a welcome improvement to people's safety and comfort in crossing the road at these points.

"Though every effort will be made to minimise delays, including manually operated temporary lights, I'd like to apologise in advance for any inconvenience these works may cause.

"Island Roads will do all they possibly can to minimise disruption and complete the works in a timely way."

The scheme, which is due to be completed by 3 December, will see upgrades the introduction of dropped kerbs, new road markings and signage, tactile paving, increased hard standings and improved drainage.

The works on Cowes Road include a new tactile pedestrian crossing point and a small section of footway on the western side of the carriageway, providing for a much safer link to a nearby footpath.
