Arrest Made After Armed Response To Sandown Incident

Emergency services are responding to an incident in Sandown this afternoon (Wednesday).

At least eight police cars are in the town, along with paramedics from the Isle of Wight Ambulance Service.

Armed police with riot shields can be seen in the area.

Three fire appliances are also at the incident.

Officers are on Avenue Road, near to Central Stores.

The road is currently closed from Fort Street.

It's understood an individual has claimed he is in possession of petrol bombs, Isle of Wight Radio has been told.

Police say they are responding to a 'concern for welfare' report.

A man has made threats, according to the force.

A spokesperson said:

"We are on scene dealing with a concern for welfare at an address on Avenue Road, Sandown.

"When officers attended a man refused to come out of the address, and made threats if officers enter the address.

"There were also reports of a small fire within the property.

"Officers are on scene with our colleagues from the ambulance and fire services."

One man has been arrested, Isle of Wight Radio has been told.

Police have confirmed a 30-year-old man from Sandown has been arrested on suspicion of affray and criminal damage.
