Key Worker Cycle Scheme Relaunches On The Isle Of Wight

The Key Worker Cycle Loan Scheme is once again open for applications.

The aim of the Isle of Wight Council scheme is to encourage key workers to choose cycling as their preferred mode of travel.

Within one week of the previous launch, the scheme gave more than 30 key workers access to a bicycle on a free long term loan.

In total, more than 160 key workers including social workers, hospital staff, teachers, supermarket staff, and prison officers took advantage of the scheme during the previous lockdown.

The council is continuing to work in partnership with established Island cycle hire businesses, Wight Cycle Hire and RouteFifty7, to deliver the project.

It forms part of the council's Connect2Work initiative, which promotes sustainable and active travel options to employees and jobseekers.

The initiative is part of the councils' Access Fund programme, which is delivered using external funding secured from the Department for Transport.

Josie, a participant of the scheme said:

"The bike loan scheme is a great idea, and after I'd finished my loan, I loved it so much, it encouraged me to purchase my own bike!"

Claire Compton, Director of RouteFifty7, said:

"After the huge success of the last key worker cycle scheme during lockdown, RouteFifty7 are delighted to be involved again. We can't wait to get the Islands key workers out cycling and enjoying the benefits that go with it."

Councillor Ian Ward, Cabinet Member for Transport and Infrastructure, added:

"Key workers are essential to keeping the Island running at this challenging time, and this scheme will support those key workers for which cycling can form part of their travel plans."

All hire bikes loaned to key workers through the scheme include a helmet, a lock, lights and delivery.
