Isle Of Wight's Oldest Pub Set To Reopen Under New Ownership

The Isle of Wight's oldest pub is to reopen next month — with a fresh face at the helm.

Nicki Monteath will take the reins at Whitwell's White Horse Inn after Rachel Sharp and Alison Wills pulled their final pints in December, following seven years of service.

The popular pub, which began trading in 1454, has been undergoing refurbishment for the past couple of months.

Nicki, who will continue running Kookies Cafe and Bistro in Ryde, aims to embrace the pub's heritage while adding some new touches.

She told Isle of Wight Radio:

"The White Horse is a community hub for the village — something I don't want to change — and it will remain a traditional village country pub.

"Because I've got my animal rescue in the village, I know a lot of the locals — some of whom have been drinking here for more than 40 years — and feel strongly about the importance of the White Horse.

"I would love to add memorabilia to the pub, so if anybody has anything or can get anything please get in touch!"

The White Horse Inn's reopening is scheduled to take place on Friday March 4, with full details to be shared closer to the time.

In addition to Nicki's commitment to the community, the pub's name has added significance.

She explains:

"I actually own a white horse called Winter, she's very muddy at the moment but after she's had a bath she'll come down for the opening and have some photos taken."

The White Horse Inn is actively seeking new members of the team for its reopening, if you'd like to get involved, or have any memorabilia you'd like to donate, send an email to [email protected].
