Isle Of Wight Woman Publicly Praised By Prime Minister For ‘Ingenious’ Veg Economy

An Isle of Wight woman with an innovative idea to make the Island self-sufficient by encouraging us to utilise our natural environment has received personal recognition from the Prime Minister.

A few years ago Holly Maslen from Bembridge had the vision of creating a "money-free economy" based solely on sharing and exchanging home-grown produce.

During the coronavirus pandemic, it soon became a well-received reality that was widely embraced by the Isle of Wight.

She believes the practice of growing and nurturing food at home is not only rewarding but also provides us with a sense of purpose, which she says became essential during the lockdown.

Her Facebook group called ‘GIVE’ or 'Green Island Veg Economy' encourages us to make the most of our outdoor space and the Island climate, by growing fruit and vegetables to share with others - at no cost.

At the peak of the pandemic, the group gained momentum and more than 7,000 Islanders joined - all keen to offer their creations to others or seek green-fingered advice and tips from like-minded Islanders.

As a result, the Prime Minister has personally congratulated and rewarded Holly, she told Isle of Wight Radio when she received the letter from Boris Johnson she "thought it was a joke". The letter said:

“With your ingenious Green Island Veg Economy, you have sown the seed of community action allowing thousands to share their home-grown produce and help nourish the most vulnerable in society.

“I hope that your brilliant initiative continues to flourish for a long time to come.”

Holly told Isle of Wight Radio:

“With the pandemic, I saw all the photos of empty shelves and people panicking about food, I thought well now would be a good time to pick up the idea I had a few years back - get everyone to grow and use the spaces they have as much as possible….

“The reason why I called it the Green Island Veg Economy is because it is creating a new economy that doesn’t involve money...

"In the pandemic situation, lots of people were losing their jobs and were uncertain about their financial situation so it is very important to stress that people wouldn’t have to buy things from other people.

"If you have got more than you can use yourself, instead of trying to sell it or chuck it away or let it rot away in the garden then get it out there and let someone else make use of it”.

Every day the Prime Minister awards an outstanding individual for their inspirational service as a 'Point of Light', to highlight the contributions of those making positive change in the community.

Holly will also receive a certificate naming her as the UK's 1446th Point of Light, to find out more about the scheme go to the website here.

She says she hopes the concept will continue to thrive and become commonplace - not just on the Island - and is currently helping a resident in Eastbourne kick start their own 'Green Island Veg Economy'.

Meanwhile, you can find out more about 'GIVE' via the Facebook group here.
