An Isle of Wight student has raised more than £2000 towards the funding of a new mental health room at Carisbrooke College.

As previously reported by Isle of Wight Radio, following the completion of Mental Health First Aid training in partnership with the Youth Trust, the college wanted to work towards becoming an accredited Mental Health Secondary school.

Year 10 student, Macie Edkins-Wherry, with the support of her mum Dana, decided to hold a raffle in the hopes of raising some much-needed money to go towards the target of £3,000.

In total, 1,665 tickets were sold, and between the garage sale and raffle, Macie and Dana have raised a staggering £2,072.

Speaking to Isle of Wight Radio, Dana said:

"Macie was very overwhelmed by everyone’s support and would like to thank everyone who brought stuff from the garage sale, donated prizes for the raffle, brought tickets, or even donated in cash.

"It is very much appreciated and now the vision can come true and help and support students who may need it - especially in this difficult time with the pandemic."

On behalf of Carisbrooke College, Year 10 leader, Charlotte Hookey, said:

“Macie’s efforts to support this cause are nothing short of amazing, and truly reflects the kind and caring young lady she is.

“I speak for the whole school when I say, Thank you very much for your efforts in raising funds for the Mental Health and Wellbeing Room here at Carisbrooke, and know that your efforts will go a long way to ensuring that a lot of students are able to access a calming environment in their times of need.”
