Isle of Wight School Transition Days Cancelled

A number of Isle of Wight schools have cancelled pupil transition days for the second year running, as a result of the delayed lifting of restrictions.

For hundreds of children starting primary and secondary school, the news comes as a blow, after open days were already cancelled towards the end of last year — meaning many children will be starting a new school in September having never stepped foot inside the building.

The announcements come following Government guidance which said traditional transition days are unlikely to feasible again this year.

Carisbrooke College, Medina College and Christ the King College are the first the get in touch with parents announcing the cancellations of transition days. Some primary schools have also cancelled 'stay and play' days for Reception starters.

In a statement, Isle of Wight Council said:

"Following the recent change to the proposed end of COVID restrictions government guidance was issued which says that traditional transitional and open days are unlikely to be feasible this academic year.

"Whether to follow this is a matter for individual schools to decide but our understanding is that Island secondary schools are likely to comply with the new guidance, meaning that transition days will not take place. Schools are expected to make contact with students and families involved directly."

The council has said many transition events will still be taking place online.
