Isle Of Wight Parents Go Head To Head In Popular Running Race Around The Island

Runners from last year's race

Parents from two Isle of Wight schools are going head to head in a race around the Isle of Wight today (Saturday).

The event started when a parent at Brighstone Primary came up with the idea, as an alternative way to raise funds for the school.

The parent, Lucy Brodie, who was head of the PTA at the time then spoke to her friend at Nine Acres Primary, Newport - and they decided the parents should race each other around the Isle of Wight.

The fundraiser is in its sixth year and even sees parents return for the popular event - even when their child has left the school.

Like a relay race, some keener and more competitive parents do 10 miles and others do less. There is no minimum distance.

Last year,  £1,000 was raised for Brighstone school - thanks to the sponsorship money made by parents.

The race starts from the Isle of Wight Pearl this morning at 5am. One team, which consists of around 20 runners, will go clockwise and the other will go anti-clockwise, both ending up at the Isle of Wight Pearl by around 4pm or 4.30pm.

Spectators are encouraged to come and cheer on the competitors.

Brighstone Primary parents have only lost ONCE against those from Nine Acres, so they are hoping to take the win again.

Katherine Harrison, Chair of the Brighstone School Association told Isle of Wight Radio:

"It's all a bit of fun but it is sponsored and we raise money for the children at both schools...We have past parents who come and join us and they love just taking part because they have fun and join in...

She added:

"Come on board and join the team of runners, we all have a lot of fun and it really doesn't matter if you have never run before. Some people just train for the race - just to run a section of it."
