Isle of Wight NHS Trust Team Wins Nursing Times Award For ‘Care Of Older People’

The Isle of Wight NHS Trust has scooped one of this year’s prestigious Nursing Times Awards.

The Community Rapid Response Team claimed the ‘Care of Older People’ category at an awards ceremony held in London last Wednesday (October 27). The team was recognised for its compassionate approach and rapid response to meet the needs of older patients in crisis during the pandemic.

Lesley Stevens, Director of Community, Mental Health and Learning Disabilities, said:

“I am extremely proud of our Community Rapid Response team and it is a real pleasure to be able to congratulate them on this well-deserved win. This award is an endorsement of their commitment to providing ongoing high-quality crisis care for our older patients during a very challenging period for everyone.

“The team worked closely with community partners to make system wide changes, including using technology and improved coordination of care to treat more people at home. Their innovative and flexible approach helped to provide patients with more choice and an alternative to hospital admission. I am delighted to see them honoured and recognised in this way.”

Nicola Longson, Director of Operations for Community, said:

“I am absolutely thrilled to see our Community Rapid Response Team receive this national accolade. The team went above and beyond during a very challenging period to ensure that older people who were most impacted by the pandemic, could receive safe and compassionate care in their own homes.

“It is a real honour to be recognised in this way, with the greatest reward being the way we care for our patients and their families, and to work with amazing partners and colleagues.”

The awards bring together the nursing community to shine a light on the brightest talent in the profession and to recognise those who are pioneering best practice in nursing to make a difference to people’s lives every day.

A service user who has been cared for by the Community Rapid Response Team said:

“Thank you to all the Crisis Team nurses who attended to my wife, they were all fantastic in their devotion to their job. A special mention to Penny who went above and beyond her duties in my eyes for all she did for my wife and me. I am so glad to have met someone of her calibre and all that she did for us. You should be proud of all your team”.

The Nursing Times Awards recognise those making nursing an innovative, patient-focused and inclusive profession.

The 31st Nursing Times Awards ceremony was held at the Grosvenor House Hotel on Park Lane in London on Wednesday October 27.
