Isle Of Wight MP Backs Ban On Paid Consultancy Work

The Isle of Wight's MP appears to be backing calls to ban politicians from acting as consultants — or paid lobbyists.

Ahead of a vote on the issue this afternoon (Wednesday), Bob Seely says it's a "conflict of interest".

It comes amid a row over alleged "dirty tricks" and "sleaze" at Westminster. It has been fuelled by the ongoing argument over former MP Owen Paterson, who has been accused of breaking lobbying rules.

A Labour motion called for a ban on “any paid work to provide services as a parliamentary strategist, adviser or consultant”.

Yesterday (Tuesday) Boris Johnson said he supported the proposal, prompting the Government to table its own proposals - a move which infuriated Labour.

The Shadow Commons Leader argues the Conservative's amendment effectively makes Labour's motion non-binding.

Sharing an article which supported a ban, Mr Seely said:

"Good. MPs should be banned from paid consultancy. It is a conflict of interest."

In response, Cllr Richard Quigley, from Island Labour, said he is "looking forward" to seeing the MP vote for the Labour motion.

"It's the right thing to do", he said. "Well done in advance."
