Isle Of Wight MP Among Tory Rebels Hoping To Reverse Foreign Aid Cuts

Isle of Wight MP Bob Seely is among the Conservative rebels hoping to force the government to reverse controversial cuts to foreign aid later.

30 backbenchers - including former Prime Minister Theresa May - are backing a revolt against the £4bn reduction.

An amendment to the Advanced Research and Invention Agency Bill aims to restore a commitment to spend 0.7% of national income on international development.

It was reduced to around 0.5% earlier this year.

People in countries such as Syria, Yemen and South Sudan, rely on the British aid. Agencies warn the cuts could result in thousands of deaths.

Around 45 Conservatives will be needed to defeat the government.

The bill is currently at the report stage for scrutiny.

The decision on whether it's put to a vote rests with speaker Sir Lindsay Hoyle.
