Isle Of Wight Liberal Democrats Reveal Manifesto For 2021

Nick Stuart

Replacing the floating bridge and working with landowners to develop woodlands - are among plans set out by the Isle of Wight Liberal Democrats.

Ahead of next month’s local elections, the party has revealed its political pledges for the Island - if it was to get its feet under the table at County Hall.

The manifesto focuses on ten main points and is centred on three priorities: the environment, generating jobs and listening to the Island community.

It plans to enhance collaboration with the Isle of Wight NHS Trust, care and voluntary sectors to support the vulnerable and create a ‘fairer society'.

It wants to reduce the 'housing grab’ by enforcing existing laws and planning policies, whilst also developing a policy that protects green spaces - and supports local families and the ageing population.

The party wants to replace the floating bridge and ‘seek compensation from those responsible’ - and consult on plans to make it free for pedestrians.

It also wants to develop the use of redundant buildings, ones owned privately or by the local authority for micro-businesses.

Another pledge includes working with the AONB Partnership, CPRE and Forestry Commission to develop new woodlands and wildlife corridors, with a focus on protecting inshore water ecosystems too.

Nick Stuart, chair of the Isle of Wight Lib Dem local party, said:

“The Liberal Democrats have listened to Islanders and spoken to many Island organisations over the last four years. We offer Islanders a chance to help remove a Conservative administration that has failed.

“Island residents. Together with a Conservative government their cuts have hit Islanders very hard, particularly those on the lowest incomes. They keep promising an Island Deal but this year government has only provided £50,000 for another study. It feels like we’re being fobbed off.

“The Liberal Democrat plans would lead to a fairer, listening Council that avoids Conservative mistakes such as their management of the Floating Bridge fiasco. We need action to develop new jobs, protect and rescue our natural heritage, and support communities.”

Local elections take place on May 6.
