Isle Of Wight Firefighters Need New On-Call Team Member

Do you want to join the Isle of Wight’s team of firefighters?

Islanders are being urged to apply for a new, paid, on-call recruitment role which also allows you to carry on with your normal day job.

If you are successful you will work across both fire stations on the Isle of Wight and be responsible for responding to a pager, which will alert you about incidents.

The role is no different to being a full-time employee, in terms of your training or the type of incidents that you respond to and you don’t need any previous experience.

You will have to complete three hours of training once a week, which will not impact your current job.

Station Commander for Newport Fire Station, Stuart Botto told Isle of Wight Radio:

“A huge part of our response to emergencies on the Island is taken care of by what we would call our on-call or retained colleagues and they are people from all different walks of life that live and work in their communities.

“They respond to a pager so as and when we have an emergency incident our control operators would activate the pagers and they need to respond to whichever fire station it is they work from within roughly five minutes and they will go out and deal with whatever the incident is that comes in”.

Stuart says what they will be looking for is someone who can work as part of a team and someone who cares about their community.

Previously, the role has been given to Islanders from a range of backgrounds, from nurses to teachers and accountants.

Stuart added:

“We would be really keen to hear from anyone who may be interested and obviously we can educate them a little bit more with the ‘Have A Go Day’.

The ‘Have A Go Day’ takes place on October 17 - with two sessions available at 10am and 1pm.

The day will give you the opportunity to:

  • Ask questions about the role
  • Speak to firefighters directly about the type of work they do
  • Ask about contractual requirements
  • Try out practical tests

You must email [email protected] before the day to say you are keen to attend.

If you can’t make the ‘Have A Go Day’ you can log on to www.oncallfire.co.uk  to find out more information about the role.
