Isle Of Wight Fashionistas And Environmentalists Invited To 'Sew And Tell' Sessions

Sewing and textiles

Islanders interested in fashion and its relationship with the environment are invited to join a new online evening group - which focuses on repairing, upcycling and repurposing textiles.

Planet Aware’s ‘Sew and Tell’ offers Islanders the chance to meet others informally and share motivational ideas about how to spend your time creatively during the lockdown.

It will also be an opportunity for you to learn about the relationship between fashion and the environment.

Each session will focus on a specific technique or garment - the first one is Jeans - making, repurposing and understanding what’s hot and what’s not in the world of denim.

Director of Planet Aware, Anne Sayer told Isle of Wight Radio:

“It’s an opportunity to share some great things you can do around the textile repair. The long term idea is to understand whether people are interested to encourage repair and reuse. It’s essentially part of a move into a more caring and responsible economy.

“Rather than this idea you buy an item, use it then chuck it away -  it’s about how we can keep this in use for longer?

"If we keep things in use for longer -  we reduce their environmental impact and repairing clothes is just one part of that.”

Since it launched last week, around 20 people have signed up to the evening sessions - which will run every two weeks.
