Isle Of Wight Council's Top Earners Revealed

Six Isle of Wight Council officers earned a yearly salary of more than £100,000 during the height of COVID-19, figures from the TaxPayers' Alliance reveal.

The Town Hall Rich List shows the salaries of council employees in 2020 to 2021.

Topping the list was CEO John Metcalfe, who earned £135,998. Including his pension of £31,959, the total expense to the taxpayer was £167,897.

He has since left the post, having taken up the same role in Cumbria. As of March 31, the annual salary for that job was £152,670.

Assistant CEO Wendy Perera, who has replaced Mr Metcalfe as Interim CEO, received £135,365 (including her £25,758 pension).

Second on the list was Carol Tozer, who has since left the role of Director of Adult Social Service. She was paid £123,931. Her £29,124 pension brought her annual income to £153,055.

Meanwhile, the Director of regeneration, Chris Ashman, earned £140,705, with a pension of £26,774.

The council's fifth highest earner was Director of neighbourhoods, Colin Rowland, who claimed £105,850. Adding a pension of £24,875, his income  totalled £130,725.

And Director of corporate services, Claire Shand, was paid £103,979 and claimed an unspecified 'other' of £1,343. Her annual pension totalled £24,435.

John O’Connell, chief executive of the TaxPayers' Alliance, said:

“Taxpayers facing a cost of living crisis want to know they are getting value for money from their local authority leadership.

“With households having suffered through the pandemic and now struggling under colossal tax bills, the country needs councils to prioritise key services without resorting to punishing tax hikes.

“These figures will allow residents to judge town hall bosses for themselves and hold their local councils to account.”

Pay for council staff differs to that of elected councillors, who receive an allowance as opposed to a wage.

The current basic allowance is £8,231 following a rise last year, as Isle of Wight Radio previously reported.
