Isle Of Wight 'Chosen' For Second Coronavirus App Trial, Say Reports

The Isle of Wight will once again trial the UK's coronavirus contact tracing app, according to the BBC.

It comes just months after the first trial was scrapped because of what the Government called 'technical problems', as Isle of Wight Radio previously reported.

Inaccuracy on the NHSX designed version with iPhones was partly to blame, according to developers at the time.

On Apple's iPhone, the app only identified about 4% of contacts. Whereas, 75% of contacts were identified on Android.

However, the BBC is now reporting the Island will again be chosen as the Government switches to a new model.

The report says the software will now be based on Apple and Google's privacy-centric method of one smartphone detecting another.

According to the BBC, engineers are still trying to reduce how often the Bluetooth-based tech wrongly flags people as being within 2m (6.6ft) of each other.

It's understood the Isle of Wight will be involved once again, along with one other area and a volunteer group.

The app would be used to inform people when they have been in close contact with another person who is displaying coronavirus symptoms.

If a user is diagnosed with the disease, the other person could be advised to self-isolate.

Isle of Wight Radio is expecting an official announcement later today.
