Islanders Urged To Smile And Wave For Grandad Mick!

Grandad Mick and his family

People on the Isle of Wight are being encouraged to "smile and wave" today (Sunday).

The new initiative - created by a man from Freshwater - was inspired by his Dad Mick, who is terminally ill with cancer.

Mick and his family were sat on Ventnor Seafront when he decided to start "smiling and waving at strangers".

When Islanders didn't smile and back Mick exclaimed: "Come on it's smile and wave day!"

Mick's son Darren is now hoping the idea will become a new trend worldwide.

Darren told Isle of Wight Radio:

"My Dad is terminally ill with cancer and I just thought seeing him that happy after what he has gone through recently just made me want to spread the word a bit and get the word out and everyone to join in.

"A lot of people have already started sharing it around the world - people in Australia, Canada and Germany - so hopefully it will start spreading around."
