Islanders Urged Not To 'Panic Buy' Fuel

Queues at Sainsbury's petrol station in Newport on Friday

Islanders are being urged NOT panic buy fuel - as traffic queues build around petrol stations.

Drivers are being told to fill up their cars with petrol as normal, while the Government claims it’ll move 'heaven and earth' to fix supply problems caused by a lack of lorry drivers.

The transport secretary doesn't think the issues will last long, and says he's not ruling anything out to fix them.

But Grant Shapps is calling it a 'defined problem' - although BP has temporariy closed some stations in the UK.

A “small number” of Tesco refilling stations have also been impacted, said Esso owner ExxonMobil, which runs the sites.

Despite the message, drivers have descended on petrol pumps on the Island, with queues reported at Morrison's in Lake and Newport, Sainsbury's and Asda.

Speaking today, Mr Shapps told Sky News:

“The advice would be to carry on as normal, and that is what BP is saying as well."
