Island Sides Back In Wessex League Action

Newport and Cowes Sports return to Wessex League action tomorrow (Saturday), following morale-boosting victories for both teams in their respective FA Cup, extra preliminary round ties last weekend.

Meanwhile, East Cowes, who opened their Division One programme with a home draw against Amesbury, face a trip to the mainland to take on Fleet Spurs.

In the Premier Division, Cowes Sports will be looking to pick up their first points of the new campaign when they take on Alresford Town at Westwood Park. The Yachtsmen finished just two places, but 10 points adrift of Alresford last season, so will hoping to get much closer this time round, with a three-pointer the perfect platform.

Newport take on Folland Sports, at their temporary home at East Cowes Vics’ ground. Both Newport and Folland reached the Division One play-offs last season after Newport finished fourth, just one place and one point above today’s opponents.

Both teams will be looking to go one better this campaign, making a home win for Port even more important.

Despite having to travel to the mainland for their First Division match, East Cowes Vics should go into the clash against Fleet Spurs with a fair degree of confidence, but not complacence.

Fleet struggled for much of last season, with just five wins and 21 points from 36 games. Vice did slightly better, finishing six points and one place above Fleet, courtesy of two more victories than their opponents throughout the campaign. They will be eager to show that the summer break has done them good, and they will be looking for far more success this time round.

All three games involving the Island teams, kick off at 3pm.
