Island Charities Rejoice After Receiving Long Lane Christmas Donations

Local charities Daisy Chains IW and the Isle of Wight Prostate Cancer Support Group received belated Festive cheer this morning (Monday) as part of a long-standing Christmas initiative.

Each of the charities was presented with a cheque for £2,250, courtesy of Terry and Sue Ramplin's dazzling Christmas lights display in Newport.

The big switch-on for Long Lane's iconic Christmas lights display had included a marching band and appearance from Father Christmas in the lead up to Christmas.

Terry and Sue have been lighting up their home at 68 Long Lane, Staplers for the past 22 years — raising around £40,000 for local charities.

Terry told IW Radio:

"Thank you to the Isle of Wight for the donations to see our Christmas lights, which took myself and my lovely wife Sue three months to put up.

"As cancer is such a big thing we decided to raise money for Daisy Chains and the Prostate Cancer Support Group this year.

"I am now 71 and find it harder to get on the roofs, so I might have to do it in a slightly different way next time — if anybody can help me with the lights moving forwards we would love to hear from you."

Alan Taylor, chairman of the IW Prostate Cancer Support Group, said the charity will use the money to help facilitate the blood testing process.

He said:

"We are very grateful to have been chosen by Terry this year, the funds will help us in the build up to our PSA testing day in Cowes on May 7.

"Normally 250 people turn up at the events, and the money will go towards the equipment we need to do blood tests and send the results out afterwards."

Those who would like to attend the event, which is aimed at men between the ages of 40 and 90, can register online

Mandy Fuller of Daisy Chains IW was also ecstatic to receive a donation.

She explained:

"We found out we would be one of the chosen charities in November and are very grateful for the continued support from Terry and Sue.

"The money will be used for general travel funding for the families of premature babies, and the children we support on a regular basis with appointments at hospitals in Southampton and Portsmouth."

A litany of local charities have benefited from Terry's generous donations over the years, including Ability Dogs 4 Young Persons, Homestart, Lottie Rann Trust, Medina House School and Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance.
