Island Business Invests In New Technology To Improve Packaging

Rookley based packaging and supply company - Betapak - has invested in new technology to provide Isle of Wight businesses with a locally manufactured, sustainable packaging solution, to reduce cost and its carbon footprint.

Named ‘EcoFillPak’, it is an extremely eco-friendly product made completely from starch, is lighter, water-soluble and 100% compostable.

Betapak has invested in the specialist equipment to now manufacture its own biodegradable loose fill packaging.

Jon Carter, Betapak Managing Director, said:

“This investment has been made specifically with the aim of eliminating all plastics from our extensive packing lines, making a positive impact on the planet while still providing the best packing experience for customers to ensure their products arrive safely to their customers.”

The investment is another example of the company’s commitment to the environment that also ensures the new machine is powered from the 77 solar panels on the roof of its offices and warehouse complex in Rookley, while orders are delivered from its growing number of electric vans which includes the latest e-Dispatch, from Citroen.

The surge in online shopping and businesses shipping to more destinations than ever before has resulted in unprecedented volumes of product packaging flooding into homes, exacerbating the landfill and environmental crisis. The traditional foamed loose fill plastic used by many is non-biodegradable and takes decades to decompose, adding to micro-plastic pollution. Added to this is the high carbon footprint of large lorries travelling to the Island to deliver conventional plastic loose fill, which can be eliminated by this now being manufactured locally, on the island.

Jon added:

“EcoFillPak is a highly practical solution for loose fill that any business can change to now. It is also lighter, reducing weight and delivery cost, saving businesses money whilst also reducing their carbon footprint. Buying from us as a local manufacturer further reduces transport cost and delivery miles in addition to supporting the Island's economy.”
