Investigations Continue As Shanklin Roadworks Cause Misery For Weeks

Temporary traffic lights have been causing misery for drivers trying to access Shanklin Esplanade.

The lights have been in place for six weeks for roadworks, after a void was discovered under the carriageway on Hope Hill.

It has caused delays for drivers trying to access - and leave - the seafront.

Island Roads revealed that a hole had been discovered - thought to be as a result of recent works carried out by Southern Water.

An Island Roads spokesperson said:

"Temporary traffic lights have been installed in Hope Hill for safety reasons to keep traffic away from a void that has been detected beneath the carriageway.

"We believe this void is connected to recent Southern Water work in the area and we have arranged a site meeting with Southern Water to discuss the situation and investigate how repairs should progress.

"We will continue to monitor the temporary traffic lights to ensure they are allowing optimum traffic flows until the void is repaired. We hope this situation can be resolved promptly."
