'I Love The Isle Of Wight': Kayaker Trains On The Island For 700 Mile Challenge

Jack and his Kayak on the Island

A man who taught sailing in Bembridge who says he 'loves the conditions of the Solent' is training on the Isle of Wight for a 700-mile kayak marathon, to raise money for ‘The Fishermen’s Mission’.

Jack Gatacre is planning to kayak around the Isle of Wight in just one day (around 15 hours) and cross the Solent twice - starting and finishing at the Witterings, as part of his training for an even bigger challenge.

All his efforts will contribute to the charitable challenge he plans to undertake in southern Scotland in August, where he plans to cover 50 miles a day for two weeks.

Jack told Isle of Wight Radio:

“This training day is going to be really exciting, I love the Isle of Wight and the conditions of the Solent. I have planned very carefully with the tidal times as I’ve been caught at the Needles in a tidal gate which was quite dangerous and frightening.”

Jack added:

“It is an uncertain and difficult time for fishermen across the country, they have had a difficult time [like all of us] so I thought it would be a good one and my girlfriend’s father is a retired fisherman so that’s where the idea came from.”

Jack will take to the waters on the Isle of Wight on June 20.
