Halloween Fireworks In Newport Bus Station Lead To Arrests

Police on the Isle of Wight were kept busy on the evening of Halloween (Saturday) after people set off fireworks in the bus station in Newport.

When police arrived on the scene, officers say they were 'subject to abusive behaviour from a small group of males'.

In response, police deployed PAVA incapacitant spray - similar to pepper spray - to detain a number of the males.

A 17-year-old boy from Cowes has been arrested on suspicion of assault. 

18-year-old Scott Parker from Newport has been charged with drunk and disorderly.

A 17-year-old male and a 15-year-old boy from Carisbrooke were also arrested on suspicion of obstructing a police constable.

A spokesperson for Hampshire Constabulary said:

'We were called at 8.8pm on Saturday, 31 October, to reports of a group setting off fireworks at the bus station on Cockrams Yard, Newport.

'On police arrival three boys were located. A 17-year-old boy from Cowes, and a 15-year-old boy from Carisbrooke, were witnessed to be fighting by the officers. The 17-year-old boy was arrested on suspicion of affray. The 15-year-old boy was arrested on suspicion of affray, obstructing a police officer, and being drunk and disorderly.

'They have been released from custody on police bail. The third boy, aged 17 from Shanklin, was reported for obstructing a police officer.'
