"Great Regret" - Jobs Fears At Isle Of Wight Firm Strainstall

There are fears for the future of up to 22 employees at Isle of Wight firm Strainstall.

The company, based in Cowes, has announced it plans to 'restructure' the business in light of the coronavirus pandemic - and what it calls the 'sustained fall in oil price'.

It says both of these factors continue to have a significant impact on the business and market demand.

Strainstall, which is part of the James Fisher and Sons plc group, deals with monitoring and sensor based technology.

It says employees have already been asked to reduce their working hours, with some staff placed on the Government’s furlough scheme.

The firm says it has also made temporary pay deferrals and reduced board and executive pay.

However, it claims it has now been left with no choice but to 'consult' with 22 of the firm's 39 employees regarding redundancies.

Simon Everett, managing director at Strainstall, said:

“Strainstall employees have worked incredibly hard to support the business during what have been a challenging few months, so it is with great regret that the global COVID-19 pandemic has caused us to have to review the business structure in this way.

“The team has been extremely understanding of the challenging situation we face and I’ve been really impressed by how everyone's supporting each other and the business through it.

"We’re working hard to ensure all our employees are supported and will work closely with everyone over the next few weeks as we progress through the collective consultation process together.”
