Good News For East Cowes As York Avenue Reopens

It is good news for Islanders in East Cowes as York Avenue has reopened.

Work to improve the main route in and out of East Cowes has been going on since March.

Initially, the four-phase plan to upgrade York Avenue was supposed to be finished before the start of the main tourism season on the Island. However, delays and setbacks have taken place.

Residents also branded the works an "absolute joke" with unclear diversion routes, bus routes refusing to serve the town, cones put in parking spaces and heavy-duty vehicles causing houses to shake as they were forced to divert down residential roads.

Businesses on York Avenue exclusively revealed to Isle of Wight Radio they have suffered massively as a result of the works, with profits 90 per cent down. They also claim they were not informed about the works.

Two Southern Water water leaks in the space of a week also occurred on Clarence Road, as previously reported by Isle of Wight Radio.

Water leaks, Red Funnel cancellations and roadworks caused uproar and chaos in the town on Friday, with East Cowes businesses saying there was 'no point in opening'. Traffic was at a standstill - with one road being used as the main route in and out of the town.

Island Roads and Southern Water issued an apology to those in the town as a result.

The good news is, from tonight (Thursday) until Saturday Island Roads will be working overnight to finish the last part.

The top of York Avenue will be resurfaced outside English Heritage's Osborne estate and Osborne Garage.
