GALLERY: Isle Of Wight Falls Silent To Mark Armistice Day

The Isle of Wight has fallen silent to remember to mark Armistice Day today.

On the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month, Islanders paid their respects to the fallen.

Today marks 120 years since the end of World War One.

Wreaths were laid and High Sheriff Caroline Peel was present as a small ceremony was held at St Thomas' Square in Newport at 11am.

 It follows on from Remembrance Sunday where services were held as a mark of respect.

From Shorwell to Sandown, Island dignitaries gathered from across the Island for both Remembrance Day and Armistice Day.

 

The Lord Lieutenant, Susie Sheldon, said of the services:

‘It was sad that our normal community Remembrance Events could not take place this year but I am aware of the enormous effort that has been put into making sure we mark the day appropriately.

"Many people have quietly laid their own wreaths and wreaths for the organisations they represent and our War Memorials around the Island show that we have not forgotten the huge sacrifices that have been made in the past."
