Freshwater Man Invents 'Smile And Wave Day' For 'Grandad Mick'

Grandad Mick

A Freshwater man's come up with a new idea which he says has already had worldwide recognition.

'Smile and Wave Day' was invented by Darren Ford - but inspired by his Father Mick, who has terminal cancer.

The idea came about when Mick - known as 'Grandad Mick' was on Ventnor Seafront with his family and started waving at strangers.

Darren told Isle of Wight Radio how his Father said to anyone that didn't wave back: "come on it's smile and wave day!"

Every single one then decided to wave back with a smile on their face which Darren says "really cheered him up".

Darren said:

"My Dad is terminally ill with cancer and I just thought seeing him that happy after what he has gone through recently just made me want to spread the word a bit and get the word out and everyone to join in.

"A lot of people have already started sharing it around the world - people in Australia, Canada and Germany - so hopefully it will start spreading around."

Mick will be sat outside his house taking part - smiling and waving at strangers who walk past.

It's hoped Islanders and people across the world will take part in the first Smile and Wave day this weekend (Sunday 1 November.)
