Freshwater Church Bells Ring Out For First Time Since Lockdown

Church bells at Freshwater's All Saints' Church have rung out for the first time since the country went into lockdown.

In what's been described as a "special day", bell ringers from across the Island gathered at the church on Sunday August 1

All six of All Saints' bells could be heard throughout the village - something which was said to have "delighted folk".

Tower captain, John Smith, said:

“The ringers received very positive comments from parishioners - they were delighted to hear all six bells ring out in their majestic glory over Freshwater once again."

As well as John, other local ringers included David Cobbett, Richard Fenton and Lesley McMahon-Hathway.

They were joined by visitors Graham and Viv Nobbs, who are members of the All Saints’ Church, Ryde band.

The heaviest bell in the Freshwater Church ‘ring’ is the ‘tenor’ - it was cast in 1895 weighing in at around 16cwt.

All Saints, Freshwater band is once again on the look out for new ringers.

If you would like to have tuition, either at Freshwater or elsewhere, or you would just like more information about bell ringing, you can contact: Viv Nobbs.
