Former St George's School Student From Wootton Takes On First Marathon Fundraiser

A former St George's School student has raised nearly £1,000 for his former special school and Islanders who have struggled with their mental health during the pandemic.

Jamie Hindson says getting a job as a teaching assistant at his former school was 'the best day of his life', which is why he wanted to raise some money for them.

Last Sunday, he took on his first solo marathon across the Island - which took him just over two hours to finish.

After half a year of training and the event being cancelled because of the pandemic, it was finally able to go ahead.

Jamie has now raised a total of £800 after an initial target o £500.

The 30-year old says it will be split two ways, with one half going to St George's School and the other half going to mental health causes.

He told Isle of Wight Radio:

'The reason behind it was because at the start of the pandemic there wasn't much support for those suffering with mental health and i wanted to not only raise awareness but to raise money for two worthy causes.

'The event was just perfect in every way. I had some people beep at me cheering me on, a few claps and cheers along the way and end, photos and films taken which was just brilliant.

'The comments and support I’ve had during this journey have just been amazing. It’s made my day. I would like to send out a massive thank you to those who cheered for me, wished me luck and donated. Thank you.'
