Flood Alert Issued For The Isle Of Wight

A Flood Alert is in force for the Eastern Yar.

The Environment Agency says flooding is possible for the Eastern Yar and tributaries from Whitwell to Bembridge.

In the last 24 hours, over 40 mm of rain has been recorded at Wroxall.

Water levels are also expected to be high at Langbridge and Alverstone.

A spokesperson for the Environment Agency said:

'The water level in the Eastern Yar is high and slowly rising. In the last 24 hours, over 40 mm of rain has been recorded at Wroxall. From 21:00 on Friday 18/06/2021, the river will be high at Langbridge and Alverstone, causing minor impact flooding to low lying land, footpaths and cycle tracks. We do not expect property flooding. At Alverstone, the river is unlikely to peak until around midnight.

A spokesperson added:

'The level should fall in the early hours, and it will continue to lower for some time into tomorrow. On Friday we do not expect main road flooding at Sandown. The weather remains largely dry on Saturday but more unsettled weather is forecast from Sunday (20/06/2021) and into Monday (21/06/2021) with similar rainfall totals to Friday possible due to thunderstorms.

'Generally, overnight and for the next 12 hours, please expect the river to be higher than normal. We continue to monitor the forecast. If you use pumps to help reduce water levels in gardens, please ensure they can operate. This Flood Alert will be updated by 10:00 on 19/06/2021.'

Elsewhere, parts of the south and southeast of England have seen up to a month's worth of rainfall in one day.

More heavy rain and thunder is expected overnight into Sunday and on Monday across England.
