Flood Alert Issued For Eastern Yar Between Whitwell And Bembridge

A flood alert has been issued for the Eastern Yar - between Bembridge and Whitwell.

Residents in the area are being advised to be prepared, following heavy rainfall overnight into this morning (Monday).

The Environment Agency said:

"The water level in the Eastern Yar is high and rising. In the last seven hours, 20mm of rain has been recorded at Knighton. More than half a month’s rain has fallen in the last 2 days.

"From 12pm this afternoon, water levels will become noticeably high at Alverstone, rising near to the top of the river bank. Some minor out of bank flooding may also occur in fields at Langbridge. We do not expect access issues to Horringford or impacts at Sandown. Property flooding is not expected.

"Showers will continue to affect the Island until at least 3pm, with up to 5mm expected. The river should peak around 1pm.

"However, additional rain from this morning’s showers, will impact on the rate of fall, and water levels may remain high until mid-afternoon.

"Tomorrow, the weather will be drier, and flood risk will reduce. We will ensure the river remains free of any reported blockages. We continue to monitor the forecast. Pumps used to protect gardens from flooding may need to operate."

An further update is expected by 6pm.

*Updated 10.35am

A flood alert is in place for Gurnard Luck.

In the last 24 hours, more than 20 milimetres of rain has been recorded in Cowes.

The Environment Agency said:

"The water level in the Gurnard Luck is high and rising. In the last 8 hours, more than 20mm of rain has been recorded at Cowes. This is a modest amount, but it follows a few days of wet weather.

"High tide at Cowes is expected at 12:30 this afternoon (09/08/21). The river will continue to rise and will remain high for at least 3 hours after time of high water (15:30), before it can drain with the lowering tide. Between 14:00 and 15:30, properties nearest to the river, in Marsh Road, may experience garden flooding.

"Showers will continue to affect the island until at least 16:00 this afternoon. At Gurnard, the showers are unlikely to bring large totals of rain, so after high tide, it is unlikely that further impacts will occur from the river. We continue to monitor the forecast, and will ensure the river remains free of any reported blockages.

"Until water levels fall with the lowering tide, please keep away from the river at Gurnard Road Bridge. Water will be deep and fast flowing. This Flood Alert will be updated or removed by 19:00 on 09/08/21."
