Flood Alert Issued For Eastern Yar Between Whitwell And Bembridge

There is a chance of flooding on the Eastern Yar, between Whitwell and Bembridge, prompting the Environment Agency to issue a flood alert.

In the last 12 hours, the agency said that 10mm of rain was recorded at Wroxall, most of which fell in 2 hours late last night (Thursday). At Alverstone and Langbridge, flooding of low lying land, footpaths and cycle tracks will continue.

Residents in the area are advised to 'be prepared'.

The Environment Agency said:

"The water level in the Eastern Yar is high and rising.

"We do not expect property flooding, but the river could be 0.2m higher than recorded yesterday. By 1pm, an on-set of flooding to Golf Links and Moreton Common Road will occur.

"Today, the weather should remain fairly dry. At Alverstone, the river is unlikely to peak until around 12pm, when it will be near the top of the river bank at the main road bridge.

"The level should begin to fall by 2pm. At Sandown, the river won’t peak until midnight. Tomorrow (Saturday) further heavy rain is forecast with up to 20mm expected.

"This rain could cause very high river levels. We continue to monitor the forecast. Please remain prepared for further flood impacts this weekend."
