Flats Proposed Above Newport's Former - And Empty - Carphone Warehouse Shop

Newport High Street

Another spot on Newport High Street looks set to be transformed into flats.

The space is above the former Carphone Warehouse, which closed last year, but the ground floor will remain as retail space and the shop is on the market for offers in the region of £475,000.

While the upper floors of the building were used for storage, the two floors are not part of the shop offer.

Salt Property Holdings, in Amersham, Bucks is proposing the upper floors house two flats, one one-bed and one two-bed, with a flat roof on the top of the building changed into a terrace.

Work to be done includes redecorating the current corridors and stairs to access the upper floors and replacing all the windows on the first and second floors with double glazing.

Planning agents Appleby Architects said the change of use of the upper levels would not affect potential employment levels and the flat plans seek to optimise the property with the space available.

The conversion is said to have been designed to sit within the existing townscape sympathetically and to be in keeping with the surrounding properties.

In the application, there is no mention of the ground floor shop space being taken on by anyone.

Comments will be accepted until April 26.
