An area of undergrowth, measuring 35m by 20m, is alight on Whitwell Road.

The Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service was first called at 2.06pm.

A pump and water carrier are in attendance.

Crews are also responding to a 'small' fire in the open at Castle Close.

Firefighters say the blaze has broken near to the cliff.

*Firefighters continue to tackle the flames. The Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service says crews are at one fire which has spread.

Firefighters had to get to the flames through Castle Close, as well as Whitwell Road.

An Isle of Wight Radio listener said:

"The flames were coming from within 20 feet of the top, they very quickly spread. Red hot stones were tumbling out of bank down the steep slope. These in turn were causing secondary fires. The neighbours were out so I quickly cobbled together some garden hoses, with the help of another 2 neighbours and my friend and we got some water onto the fire that had broken out along side the boundary fence.

"The fire brigade were really good. They got to the top by Ventnor Rugby Club under 10 minutes and got straight into the worst of the fire, from the top. They worked their way down the bank. Another unit was called as accessing the lower fires which were still breaking out, was better from our neighbours house.

"Our lovely neighbours turned up having heard all the noise, but the wonderful firemen had it under control and dealt with the lower fires breaking out lower down as they started or spread. Great job fire brigade, we are very lucky to have men like that attend when we are in our greatest need."
