Fire Service Launches First Isle Of Wight Fire Cadet Unit In Sandown

The first Isle of Wight Fire Cadet unit is set to launch at Sandown Fire Station next month.

Run by Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service (HIWFRS), the programme will give those aged between 13 and 17 the chance to gain essential social, life and wellbeing skills, including a BTEC Level 2 qualification.

Fire Cadets is perfect for young people looking to have fun while taking part in firefighting drills and first aid training. They'll also get to use real firefighting equipment.

As well as having the chance to make new friends, learn teamwork skills and improve health, fitness and wellbeing, the cadets also practice interview skills to help them with future applications and CVs.

HIWFRS is also looking to recruit volunteer Fire Cadet instructors from the local community to support the new cadets on their journey, helping them to fulfil their potential and playing a part in building stronger and healthier communities.

Fire Cadet manager Melanie Walker-O’Hare said:

“As a service we are incredibly proud of our Fire Cadets programme and are thrilled to be launching our first ever unit on the Isle of Wight.

“Our existing Fire Cadet units in Ringwood, Rushmoor, and Southsea run so well thanks to our dedicated team of volunteers. To make the Sandown Fire Cadets a success, we are looking for enthusiastic volunteers who want to make a difference in their community to offer their time, commitment and support.

“If you want to become a role model for young people and help them to achieve their full potential, we’d love to hear from you.”

Sandown Fire Cadets will meet on Mondays during school term time, 6.30pm-9pm.

If you know any young people who might be interested in joining, contact the HIWFRS Fire Cadets team to find out more.

Full training and uniform will be provided for instructors. Visit hantsfire.gov.uk/community, apply on the website or email [email protected] to find out more.
