Fire Destroys Bungalow In Whitwell

A fire has ripped through a bungalow in Whitwell.

Police say no one appears to have been seriously hurt. A woman is being treated by paramedics.

Firefighters were called to Bannock Road at around quarter to 8 this morning (Tuesday).

Crews from across the Island have been in attendance. Six appliances, from Ryde, Shanklin, Sandown and Newport, were alerted.

Hampshire Constabulary officers have also been called.

A spokesperson for the force said:

"This incident is likely to be ongoing for a few hours and expect multiple emergency services in the area."

Police say there were fears the fire had spread to another property. It's not yet known how badly damaged it is.

Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service says the bungalow has suffered 80 per cent damage.

A woman was treated with oxygen and handed into the care of the Isle of Wight Ambulance Service.

A spokesperson for the service said:

"The occupant was out of the property but lots of smoke was emanating from the front door.

"The bungalow suffered 80% damage from the fire which was extinguished using six sets of breathing apparatus, two hose reels and three jets.

"The incident is now being scaled down to one fire engine following the stop message at 9.41am."
