Fears For Paraglider Leads To Yarmouth RNLI Call-Out

Fears for a paraglider in danger near The Needles led to a call-out for Yarmouth RNLI.

Yarmouth’s Severn class all weather lifeboat, Eric and Susan Hiscock (Wanderer), was tasked to launch by HM Coastguard at 6.22pm last night (Wednesday) to support in a search for a paraglider in potential difficulty.

Interrupting their scheduled training session, Yarmouth RNLI was ready for an immediate launch.

The lifeboat headed west out of the Solent towards The Needles to support the land-based coastguard team in a coastline search for a reported sighting of a paraglider who had possibly landed in the vicinity of the cliffs near The Needles.

A thorough search was made of the coastline, cliff base and inshore waters both north and south of the Needles as far out as the Fairway Buoy.

Although the winds were up to 21 knots, the visibility was good and the sea state was slight. Having found no trace of anyone in difficulty Yarmouth  RNLI were stood down by the coastguard.

The incident was drawn to a conclusion, the call for help had been made by a member of the public with good intention.

Yarmouth lifeboat returned to her berth and was ready for service at 7.40pm.

Coxswain, Howard Lester, said:

"If you believe that you see someone in trouble on the water, it is important that you call for help. This can be done by calling 999 or 112 and asking for the coastguard.

"Try to give as much information as possible and once you have called for help try to keep watch of the casualty until help arrives.

"The RNLI remains an independent charity that relies on voluntary contributions to fund its lifesaving work."
