Islanders from the Utilita Energy Hub in Newport have walked almost three million steps throughout February to raise funds for The Prince's Trust.

With youth unemployment increasing by 66,000 since the start of the pandemic and young people accounting for a 60% fall in employment - Utilita says it is working with The Prince’s Trust to help young people develop the confidence and skills needed to move into work, education and training.=

Six staff from the Utilita Energy Hub in Newport each clocked up on average 17,000 steps per day – 7,000 steps over the 10,000 steps a day target – throughout February, resulting in 102K steps a day and almost 3 million steps in total.

And it wasn’t just the Island's Utilita Energy Hub who got involved -  20 teams and 12 individuals from across the wider Utilita business took part in Future Steps too, collectively completing almost 1 million steps per day on average.

This means the incredible 27.5K steps over the month of February has raised nearly £3.5K so far.

Katherine Allen, Team Leader of the Future Steps team at the Utilita Energy Hub in Newport, said:

“Young people are suffering from a disrupted education and weakened labour market due to the impact of the pandemic on the economy. Recent research from The Prince’s Trust found that young people felt the pandemic had destroyed their career hopes. There’s therefore never been a more crucial time than now to support the younger generation, which is why we’ve been working with The Prince’s Trust to do all we can to support them, including taking part in Future Steps powered by Utilita.

“As a direct response to the pandemic, Utilita introduced measures to reassure and promote a ‘worry-free’ experience for all customers. Central to helping people save money is the Utilita Energy High 5 movement, which enables every household to use around £163 less energy each year by making five free and easy-to-follow changes at home and you don’t have to be a Utilita customer to begin saving today.”

Laura Heaton, Head of Employee Engagement at The Prince’s Trust said:

“Young people are among the hardest hit by the pandemic and need support now more than ever, so they do not lose hope for the future. We are enormously grateful to committed partners like Utilita and its staff, for supporting The Prince’s Trust and raising money for young people across the UK.”
