A collapsed culvert in Shanklin is to be fixed to help prevent flooding.

The Isle of Wight Council said the repair was necessary to prevent a repeat of the flooding of homes and businesses on Collingwood Road and Brook Path during heavy rain.

Emergency works started this morning (Monday) and are expected to take around four weeks to complete.

Councillor Paul Fuller, Cabinet member for planning, coastal protection and flooding, said:

"We understand flooding has been a significant issue for local residents and businesses in this area, which is why these works are so important.

"We've completed a detailed survey of the culvert to identify the exact areas that need work.

"This proactive approach by the Isle of Wight Council aims to mitigate the risk of flooding and provide relief to the affected community in Shanklin."
