A sailor competing in a Cowes Week race was rescued this afternoon (Saturday) after suffering a head injury.

Cowes RNLI Lifeboat was called after the elderly man's yacht began to sink, with two other crew members rescued by the lifeboat and another vessel.

The Solent Sunbeam yacht had capsized and sank off Thorness Bay.

Cowes RNLI lifeboat had already been launched at 2pm for a training exercise when the incident occurred and arrived at the scene in good time to take the crew aboard.

The man was met by the Isle of Wight Ambulance Service at Cowes Harbour, who subsequently took him to St Mary's Hospital.

The casaulty, who suffered a head injury, is also believed to have ingested seawater.

HM Coastguard teams from The Needles and Ventnor also assisted.

The lifeboat returned to station at 2.55pm.
