As previously reported by Isle of Wight Radio, English Heritage, which owns the castle, called its partial collapse a 'terrible blow' after the incident last week (Friday).

It says engineers are already planning how to restore it and noone was injured.

The erosion is understood to have been caused by a recent storm.

The castle was originally built by Henry VIII  and formed part of the king's Device Forts coastal protection programme against invasion from France and the Roman Empire.

It was used as a prison for eminent 17th-century captives, including Charles I.

And was later strengthened during the 19th and 20th centuries and played a role in defending the western Solent from invasion threats from the Napoleonic Wars to the Second World War.

The West Wight Solent swimmers swim from the historic site to Colwell Bay - so in August - assuming the event goes ahead the swimmers will be able to witness the collapse first-hand.
