'Dedicated' Volunteers Prevent Ventnor Foodbank’s Forced Closure

A ‘steering group’ of volunteers in Ventnor has meant the foodbank can continue to operate, despite a ‘dramatic’ decline in those using it - which threatened its closure.

Following discussions, the Isle of Wight Foodbank and Trussell Trust announced the centre in Ventnor would close. However, the ‘commitment’ of volunteers, working in partnership with local charity Babybox means the doors can remain open.

The Isle of Wight Foodbank insists that ‘ensuring people in Ventnor can still access emergency food’ was ‘at the heart’ of the decision.

The Trussell Trust - which provides support to 1,2000 Foodbank centres across the country insists the move ‘will not change the support Islanders can access’.

It says the level of help ‘remains unchanged’ and you can instead go to one of the other five centres’, details of which can be found here.

Susie Metcalfe who now runs Ventnor’s Foodbank said despite the changes, there has been a huge uproar in support from the across the Isle of Wight, she said:

“We have had financial donations from members of the public, members of the public wanting to set up direct debits, people coming in with food.

“Asda and Morrisons have donated a huge amount of food so the support locally and from local businesses has been phenomenal.”

Donation points for the foodbank in Ventnor are at Tescos, Wendy’s or the Baptist Church.

The foodbank is open as usual on Tuesday’s and Thursday’s at the Baptist Church in Pier Street from 10am until midday.
