Lifeboat volunteers from Bembridge have safely evacuated all the crew of a boat that ran aground off the Island's coast on Saturday evening (September 11).

But the rescue led to a decision to make it a long night for RNLI crews working on the eastern shore of the Island.

Bembridge RNLI reported that the three people brought ashore from the twin-engined 30-foot motor cruiser included an elderly crew member.

The boat fell victim to a falling tide at Bembridge Ledge, from where the H.M. Coastguard teams at Bembridge and Ventnor heard about the casualty.

The lifeboat crew used their inshore vessel, the Norman Harvey, at 7.27pm last night, when a Force 4 westerly wind let them reach the grounded vessel quickly.

Discussions with those on board the casualty boat led to the decision to recover all three crew members, and take them to the Inshore Lifeboat Station to await a rising tide when the vessel would refloat.

But, before leaving the scene, crew members said they ensured that the anchor was appropriately deployed.

After further discussions ashore, it was agreed that all three crew of the casualty vessel would make their own way back home to Hayling Island and that both Bembridge Lifeboats (RNLB Norman Harvey & RNLB Alfred Albert Williams) would launch around midnight to recover the casualty vessel with the Alfred Albert Williams then towing her to Chichester.

The decision was made in the light of the Portsmouth high water being at 3.27am, meaning that recovery to Bembridge Harbour would mean an even later wrap up.
