The owners of a caravan park in Gurnard are looking to increase the site’s capacity.
Proposals to add eight more caravans to the Sunnycott Caravan Park, on Rew Street, have been submitted to the Isle of Wight Council.
However, Island Roads are objecting on highway safety grounds.
Currently, 20 units make up the independently operated caravan park in the semi-rural location by owners Mr Mills and Mrs Wildey.
No other facilities, such as a clubhouse or swimming pool, are offered, so it is said guests hardly remain on-site, creating a quiet setting for nearby houses.
Planning documents, submitted by agents SJC, show the eight units would be added on one side of the site, which currently arranges the caravans in rows.
The plan would move two of the existing caravans, and arrange the units in a more ‘organic’ manner.
A new access road would be installed through the site, creating a one-way system.
With the new road through the site, it would be suitable for a fire engine to enter and exit the site in a forward gear, a highways requirement, something the site does not currently allow for.
Island Roads has said the application should be refused, however, due to it generating a significant increase in traffic entering and leaving the public highway through an access junction that has limited visibility towards the south,.
Island Roads has also said there are inadequate parking provisions proposed.
Existing tree coverage and already standing units would screen the proposed units from view of the neighbouring properties.
Supporting planning statements say as there are no facilities on-site, there would be economic and social benefits to the Island, with visitors spending their money elsewhere.
